Places to visit in East England: Burghley House

Description
With stunning architecture, an exquisite collection of ceramics, 17th century Italian paintings, as well as beautifully maintained `Capability Brown landscaped grounds, Burghley House is the largest and grandest house of the first Elizabethan Age. Built and mostly designed by William Cecil, Lord High Treasurer of England, between 1565 and 1587, the House is a family home to his descendants to this day.

The State Rooms, many decorated by Antonio Verrio, house the earliest inventoried collection of Japanese ceramics in the West, rare examples of European porcelain and wood carvings by Grinling Gibbons. Four magnificent State Beds stand majestically against fine examples of continental furniture and important tapestries and textiles.

An exciting new development at Burghley is the recently opened sculpture park in a reclaimed part of the gardens. This Sculpure Garden provides visitors with a tranquil setting from which to appreciate the meandering line of mature trees and the 26 acre `Capability Brown Lake. Children in particular will enjoy the carved `Teddy Bears Picnic sculpture.Within the extensive grounds of the estate is a 160 acre Deer Park. Visitors are able to walk through the deer park, and see the original herd that was established there in the 16th century.

A visit to Burghley offers a wonderful opportunity to experience a living, breathing example of Englands Elizabethan history, lavish taste and style.
